misc thoughts...

i've recently slowly moving towards non-sales-rack at the malls, and instead of buying a fashion purse of the moment, i am being good by buying beautiful, soft leather Coach purses that are more classic style (2 purses instead of 20).

but i feel like a country bumkin because i've never heard of the Hermes Birkin line of purses until yesterday (watching Gilmore Girls, and who says TV ain't edumacational?!) This particular puse costs 16000 dollars!

there's a Louis Vitton store at the mall near work, and now i'll never look at them the same way - LV purses are children's toys compared to these Birkin purses!!! OMG, do you INSURE these?!

on to other topics, i'm not typically a big fan of sci-fi - watched a few episodes of Voyager and Enterprise, and Starship Trooper and Lost In Space. but i picked up the Firefly series (produced by Fox, but was only on the air for 11 episodes) - i breezed through the episodes, and am in love with the story and the characters. the series, though short-lived, picked up a lot of momentum when it was released to DVD, and got a lot more fanfare since then on the Internet, enough so that they recently produced Serenity the movie in the theatres. if you haven't seen this series i highly recommend it; it's really well done and well written. i'm not a fan of Buffy or Angel, but it's written by the same guy. oh how i love my captain...

last sunday, i was at the hockey shop to sharpen my skates (tangent, while packing my skates after my game i cut my finger deep and didn't realize it until 2 minutes later a warm trickle of blood on the finger since the skate blade was so sharp).
it's sooo dangerous of me to be in the hockey store, because it combines my love of hockey with my love of shppping.

even though i was there for the $4 skate sharpening, i ended up doing wayyy more damage.

boring background:
my very first hockey stick was entirely 1 piece wooden stick - cheap as you can get. i wasn't sure i would stick with a very expensive hobby, and as it was i had already spent a lot of money buying 2nd hand gear just to give it the sport try, plus i was far from good enough for my stick to make a difference. When the blade broke after 2 seasons i replace it with a 2 piece - a nice rubberize shaft with a low flex (meaning it's very flexy). i love this stick, and have replaced the blade twice now (had wooden or wooden-composite blades). all the time i've replaced blades/stick it's because of the wear and tear of the wood with the ice, getting it wet and having it dried, the wood splinters on the edges...

and so

i wanted to replace the blade of my stick again, but the hockey manufacturers are moving towards 1 piece sticks instead and the blades are harder and harder to find. there were 2 choices - cheapie wooden one for 25 bux or a fancy composite for 60. and then i picked up a 1 piece stick, candy apple mica-red/black, and i was in lust over this stick... it was so light it's like air. it's flexy, it's got rubberize grips.... and it's kevlar/graphite material so it won't splinter like the previous wood blades. OMG i had to have it.

and so i bought it, no buyer's remorse (except when i think about the fact that i needed new runners because my old one is way past its prime and you need good running shoes if you're going to run the half marathon in less than a month)

i sub in for a game before my own game...
i was the only goal scorer in that game! the team i played for still lost 3-1, but i was the 1!
i was cherry-picking at the blue line (waiting there stealthly behind the other team's defense) and the puck came, the goalie could've totally swiped and bring it to the side, but this was Sunday mix level so he let me take a shot (but was in position to block my shot) - he totally had the bottom of the net covered, and he KNEW i had no lift to my shots.
except for some reason my shot lifted past his left shoulder and went in!!!!

in my own game, i'm being my usual scrappy self... the team was pressuring in the offense zone, and as usual i'm in high slots area...
mind you, every game i am in the right place all the time, but often i completely miss the redirect shots, or i'm just too high or too low for the perfect pass. This time the puck was bouncing around and redirected right to my stick, i am near middle of the high slot, and i just do my usual sent it forward as hard as i can thing...
there were 2 defense between me and the goalie, and i'm sure the goalie was screened but he started to go down as my shot came - a tad late, the puck went in 5-hole (between his legs) as he dropped to cover that area!

so far, my stick has gotten me a goal a game! so on top of my love for it, even better is that it's getting me the goals!!!!!

I'll never understand purses and shoes. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a leather bag but 16K? oookay. Same with shoes - I spend a fortune on shoes (running, cycling, work, boots etc.) but those shoes on sex in the city... (funny thing is, I know my sis loves them)

"Serenity" was pretty bland. Even our resident sci-fi geek Rak thought it sucked. All I remember is that I wouldn't rent it again.

For a girl looking at 16K purses, I'm surprised you only got a 60$ stick. I've seen x-hundred dollar sticks, let alone just the bottom part thing at crap stores like sports experts. They're tools of the trade ;) Or are carbon fibre hockey sticks getting ridiculously expensive like CF bikes?

I've longed for a Birkin for years. It's been around since the 1950s. Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly owned one. I drooled over the real thing at Hermes in Singapore this winter. There is a service in Toronto where you can rent these luxury upscale handbags for a week at a time for a prices up to a few hundred dollars a week. That way you can be seen with an assortment of high end bags but not have to commit to buying them. I wish I had thought of that business!

I think in general, you can get better if not cheaper hockey equipment in Canada, especially in Montreal. There's just so much more selection.

Although things may be slowly changing, cuz $60 for a composite stick does sound like a pretty sweet deal.

Equipment makes a difference when you're past the beginner stage. So good going Ames! Time to join the men's league. :)
